To Capture A Moment... by S. Siobhan McCarthy Artists Statement
I was given my first "real" i.e. "expensive" camera at the age of 10. It was a birthday present from my father. He was always taking photos and I was intrigued by the process and tired of being his constant subject. Upon receipt of this wonderful gift, I fell in love with the medium. I enjoyed the quiet practice of observing and capturing time. Self-taught, I became fascinated with the negotiation of the subject and the internal editing process inherent in the subjective emotional response to that said subject and the ways in which to best capture it. I often thought of it as stealing moments of time. Years later, I had to sell my camera in order to survive and to make ends meet. Two years ago I was blessed and given a digital camera for Christmas by a very special soul. Since then I have tried to resume my hobby of photography as I find it to be highly cathartic.
In most recent years I have found myself very blessed to be following my first true love, working as a professional actor. In the film industry this means I am often engaged to be someone else's subject of photography and I am therefore, open to their interpretation. In order to find and keep that delicate sense of balance and acceptance of other people perceptions of myself and to find a zen place of "sanity" in the commercial realm of my art-world I turn to my own practice of photography to keep me sane, humble and to slow down my very fast paced world.

Siobhan has studied with some of the best mask makers in the world and did a residency with the City of Vancouver at gallery gachet for the project she created called, The Masks We Wear. She makes both masquerade masks and character masks by appointment only. They can be worn or hung on the wall as art.
